ABOUT THE FILM:

HAZARDS directed by Scarlett Shepard (1 min 19 sec, DVD, 2006), is a music video/public service announcement that educates the viewer about the dangerous chemicals in cosmetics and personal care items. YouTube the film at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFQ8gFBoD_M

WHY I MADE THIS FILM:

Director, Scarlett Shepard, says, " I'm a former cosmetic junkie!  I went to the department store cosmetic counter as I had done a thousand times to stock up and to find new shades. I was sampling the lipstick, mascara, lotion and perfume when a woman approached the counter and asked the sales clerk if she had any paraben-free products. The sales clerk looked at the ingredients list for various items and most contained paraben. As a filmmaker and consumer the red flags began to rise. I asked the woman about paraben and she said that it is an ingredient researchers found in human breast tumor tissues.  I went home and checked the labels of all my products at home. They all contained paraben! I went on the web and accessed scientific journals and found that the chemicals in cosmetics and personal care items can be hazardous to my health. This personal experience inspired me to make the film and to help others find safer products.
